Top Majors at Colleges and Universities this year

College is one of the top places that offers you so many academic freedoms, and with those freedoms comes the choice of choosing a major that will put you on the career path you want. For a student in any grade level pursuing an undergraduate degree, choosing a major can be pretty daunting. Do you choose a major based on the courses that come easy to you? Do you choose a major based on your personal interests? How do you pick a major that may or may not define your future career?

The RedShelf team is made up of members who came from a variety of different backgrounds and interests. Their majors have ranged from journalism, marketing, communications, aviation engineering, computer science and so on! And now we have all found ourselves here, pursuing our careers (and living the dream of course!). 

We decided to take a look at what some of the most popular majors are at colleges across the globe, tell you a little bit about them, and even show some of the textbooks that you might use for your courses!

Business

Well this major seems to cover a wide range of interests. Whether you like problem-solving, number crunching or decision making, this major has the in's and out's of the business world. These organizations range from entrepreneurial start-ups to multi-million dollar corporations.

 

Marketing & Communications

Marketing and communication majors tend to lean more towards their creativity and storytelling. Their fiery personalities aid in strategy planning and executing on key marketing and communication initiatives.

 

Economics

Do you want to study choices? In Economics, you will study the choices of individuals, businesses, governments and societies--how they spend their time, money and allocate their resources. Be ready to commit to critical thinking and math!

Computer Science

Computer science majors play an integral role in a variety of businesses, giving them plenty of career choices. Problem solving is a major component and will be a key characteristic in succeeding in your course work!

Government/Political Science

If you have a knack for American government, foreign policy, political philosophy or just like critically thinking and using your own communication skills, this could be a major for you!

Psychology

This major delves into the human mind and explores learning, cognition, intelligence, motivation, emotion and way more. This major also looks at mental disorders and other issues within the human mind.

Health professions

The world of medicine is a large one and this area provides for a variety of different majors within, like biology, chemistry, community health, or nursing! If you're interested in evaluating, diagnosing, and treating health problems then this could be the area of study for you!

Engineering

This is another broad field that overlaps a variety of other branches, like chemical engineering, biochemistry, mechanical engineering, and more. If you like science and math and learning about the way things work and operate, this could be for you!
