This July, our Independent Publisher of the month is Marina Arshavskiy, owner of Your eLearning World, which is an eLearning company committed to helping organizations become more effective by creating result-based solutions. 1. Tell us about your background and how it led to the creation of content
I received my MA degree in Instructional Design back in 2007. Since then, I held multiple positions related to instructional design and eLearning. I have consulted extensively with private organizations and government entities, both in the United States and abroad. My course designs have won multiple awards. In 2013, I started my own eLearning company where a team of dedicatied instructional designers provide affordable innovative eLearning solutions designed to improve performance and bring organization to the next level. Also, at the end of 2013, I published the Instructional design for the ELearning book and developed a course based on that book. The book and the course combine both theoretical aspects of instructional systems design and practical information from field experience to help instructional designers create the most compelling and effective courses.
2. What differentiates your publishing company in the market?
While there are many different Instructional Design and ELearning books available on the market, I wanted to write a book that would cover everything that any instructional design professional needs to know. Additionally, I wanted to write a book that would serve as a desk reference guide. In my Instructional Design for ELearning text, you will find the best knowledge, skills and tools I could glean from the market. In addition to introducing theory and providing practical advice, this book aims to offer best practices drawn from many years of personal experience in the field of learning and development.
3. What were you motivations to pursue publishing?
When I first entered the field of Instructional Design, I reviewed a lot of literature and read many books on the subject. However, I did not find a single guide that offered a combination of theoretical and practical information. This is why I wrote the Instructional Design for ELearning: Essential guide to creating successful eLearning courses book.
4. When evaluating different resources or platforms to publish on, what criteria was important to you?
Authority and objectivity are very important to me.
5. What helped you make a decision on a platform?
I chose CreateSpace because it's a member of the Amazon group of companies, so I knew I can trust it. Also, CreateSpace distributes books to millions of potential readers on Amazon.com and other channels, and the platform provides valuable support throughout the publishing process.
6. What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when publishing your content?
Keeping up with the updates was the biggest challenge I faced. In fact, by the time I finished writing my book, I had to go back and make changes to the content because some of the information was already outdated. I am now working on the second edition of my book, which will, hopefully, become available in 2017.
7. Has it been challenging in terms of promoting or marketing your book to the masses?
I have been actively promoting the English version of my book, but I haven't promoted the Spanish version enough. I am currently developing a marketing plan for my Spanish book. In the future, I plan to translate my Instructional Design for ELearning book into other languages, and I hope to apply similar marketing strategies to all of my translated books.
8. How do you select which titles and disciplines to publish?
I am an eLearning professional, so all of my books are about instructional design and eLearning.
9. Anything else to add?
Even though the Instructional Design for ELearning book is mostly for novice and aspiring instructional designers, it can serve as a guide for eLearing professionals at any level and of any professional experience. The Instructional Design for ELearning book covers the methodology, skills and techniques and necessary for developing effective eLearning solutions.
