Getting rid of clutter before the year end—JUST SAY NO TO TOO MUCH STUFF!
“Stuff”—a four letter word that holds us back and weighs us down. As Marilyn Bohn, author of Go Organize! Says it the best, “No one ever says, ‘I wish I’d kept more stuff.”
Just because you may be getting rid of something, that doesn't mean it is necessarily gone forever. You can share and bless others with all of your stuff—while at the same time ending up with a cleaner, more peaceful home while you’re at it!
A few things you can get rid of starting today:
1. 2014 Calendar
This is a given--out with the old, in with the new!
2. Kitchen Utensils
Have an overflowing utensil drawer that only shuts in a certain way? Or maybe it only opens with a certain jiggle and pull. Chances are you have plenty of duplicate utensils which could use some decision making (toss or keep!) One trick is to put all utensils in a box and when you use one, place it back in the drawer. After about a month, see what is left in the box (besides the once-a-year items like the turkey baster) and donate what is left!
Now is the perfect time to get a jump start on cleaning out your pantry, cabinets, and refrigerator. Do some post-holiday cleaning and either toss the leftovers you aren't going to eat (let's be honest, they probably already went bad) and get rid of the countless canned items and boxed non-perishables that you won't be consuming. Best way to do this? Donate to a local charity or church to help make someone else's new year a bit brighter!
4. Stacks of magazines and papers
Let’s be honest—you probably haven’t touched that stack sitting in your living room, on an end table, or as a center piece on your coffee table in quite some time. This poses as a great opportunity to recycle!
What do you do with all of the interesting (or maybe not so interesting) novels that you have read? Here’s an idea: instead of over-piling your bookshelves, why not resell your books for extra cash? Or donate to your local library
6. For girls: Make up and accessories
Have old make up lying around? Barrettes and headbands and bobby pins that you constantly find laying around? Toss it! If you’re purchasing new make up anyways, make sure to get rid of the old!
7. Office supplies
Aren't we all guilty of having too many pens, pencils, boxes of staples, paper clips, post-its that are just over-crowding our junk drawer? Get rid of the dull pens and pencils and reorganize the ones you wish to keep, making it easy to find!
Three Easy Strategies to help De-Clutter Your Home TODAY!
8. Fill one trash bag
In your journey towards simplicity, a great de-cluttering technique is to grab a single large trash bag and see how quickly you can fill it. You may be filling the bag with trash, or it could make for a hefty donation to Goodwill.
9. Take the 12-12-12 challenge
Locate 12 items to throw away, 12 items to donate and 12 items to be returned to their proper home—can be a really fun and exciting way to quickly organize 36 things in your home while maybe even making it a bit of a competition!
10. Four-Box method
For every room in your home, set out four boxes (do one room at a time!). Label each box as a throw away, give away, keep or relocate. Each item in every room must be placed into one of the four categories!
