Shocking fact: "53% of 9-year-olds read for pleasure daily, and by the time they turn 17, that number drops to 19%."
Penguin Random House and the National Book Foundation have launched National Readathon Day in hopes to ensure that bookworms all over do not become an endangered species. Other companies such as GoodReads and Mashable have joined in the action to encourage readers across the country to take four dedicated hours to read, for a good cause.
National Readathon Day has been scheduled for this Saturday, January 24th from Noon - 4 p.m. (in individuals respective time zones). Book lovers all over will be encouraged to commit to sitting down with a good book and reading for four hours straight. This event will both celebrate literacy and help raise funds for the National Book Foundation's non-profit program, which brings books to under-served communities.
Proceeds from the event will support the National Book Foundation's education programs, like BookUp, which is an after-school reading program that has given away over 25,000 book to middle-schoolers since 2007.
The founders of National Readathon Day are asking for your participation! This even includes bookstores, libraries, and community centers nationwide to host reading "get-together's" for participants.
